La stagione 1974 segnò l'apice della carriera di Emerson Fittipaldi, al suo secondo titolo con la Mclaren M23 dopo il burrascoso divorzio da Colin Chapman e dal team Lotus. Il pilota brasiliano beffò all'ultima gara lo sfortunato Clay Regazzoni, che decise comunque di onorare il titolo di vice-Campione completando la corsa nelle retrovie con una Ferrari mai performante così come per tutto il weekend di Watkins Glen.
La disfatta della Rossa fu aggravata da beghe interne al team, che alternava il muletto assegnandolo di volta in volta allo svizzero e al suo compagno di squadra Niki Lauda.
Lauda e il 'Piccolo Orso' Jody Scheckter (chiamato così per la sua somiglianza al neozelandese Hulme) recitarono il ruolo degli outsider di lusso, arrivando a tallonare a lungo il duo Fittipaldi-Regazzoni in classifica.
A fronte della crescita di Ferrari e Mclaren (Campione del Mondiale Marche a spese proprio della Rossa) si registrò inoltre il crollo prestazionale della Lotus, in difficoltà nel realizzare una nuova vettura in grado di replicare i successi della 72D.
